Topic:
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Recently published studies indicate that a substantial proportion of hospitalized patients are at risk for VTE. Unfortunately, VTE remains a significant threat to public health despite the availability of effective and safe prophylactic measures and treatments. Therefore, it is prudent for internists to incorporate the use of prophylactic therapy in appropriate patients at risk, such as hospitalized acutely ill medical patients (e.g. cancer, elderly) with reduced mobility, identify the best agent, and prescribe optimal duration of prophylactic therapy, in everyday practice. In this program, experts in VTE will provide information on recognizing patients at risk, diagnosis, prophylaxis, and treatment.
